In the bustling harbors of Malmö, Sweden, I’m part of a small team that works tirelessly behind the scenes to support the seafarers who pass through our city. We’re a dedicated group from the Seafarers’ Club and chaplaincy, committed to making sure mariners—who often spend months away from their loved ones—have access to the items they need, whether it’s something essential or something that simply makes life a bit brighter.
Meeting Unusual Requests
One of the most interesting parts of our work is the sheer variety of requests we receive. Not long ago, a vessel asked us to track down a boxing bag, complete with gloves and the whole kit. It wasn’t an easy task, but with some determination and a bit of luck, we found what they needed. We’ve also had crews wanting vinyl records to bring the charm of analog music on board. Even more surprising was the request for a back brace for a crew member. It took some effort to locate, but we managed to find a supplier right here in Malmö.
Culinary Challenges
Then there are the food requests. Once, we had to source 20 kilograms of lamb’s liver for a vessel. It might sound daunting, but we’ve come to view these challenges as just part of the job. We’re proud to say that we succeed in fulfilling nearly all of the requests we get—time constraints are usually the only thing that prevents us from pulling off a miracle before a vessel has to leave port.
A Commitment to Seafarers
What I love most about our work is the opportunity to make a tangible difference. Even when we have no idea where to start looking for something, we dive in, tapping into local resources and using every connection we have. It’s deeply rewarding to know that we’re helping make life at sea a little more bearable.
To any seafarers traveling through Malmö: we’re here for you. Reach out to us at the Seafarers’ Club or chaplaincy, and we’ll do our very best to get you what you need. This work is about more than just sourcing items—it’s about showing the world’s mariners that they have people who care, ready to help make their time away from home a little brighter.
