This article explores the potential for the Hindu faith to advocate for and support LGBTQ+ individuals, drawing upon insights from Ankit Bhuptani of VIDYA India.
Bhuptani emphasizes that faith has often been misused as a tool for discrimination, leading to the tragic loss of lives within the LGBTQ+ community. He argues that it is time for faith leaders and practitioners to reclaim faith as a force for inclusion and love.
He highlights the Hindu faith’s inherent understanding and acknowledgment of sexual orientation diversity. This acceptance is rooted in the concept of “Kama,” one of the four fundamental aims of human life in Hinduism, which encompasses desire, including sexual desire.
Bhuptani cites examples such as the Kama Sutra, a religious text focusing on sexuality, and temples adorned with depictions of sexual acts, to illustrate Hinduism’s historical acceptance of diverse sexual expressions. He argues that these examples demonstrate that Hinduism, at its core, accommodates and understands various sexual diversities and gender identities.
He points to positive developments in India, such as the Supreme Court’s decriminalization of homosexuality and the increasing visibility of LGBTQ+ individuals. He notes that faith leaders are also coming forward to support LGBTQ+ rights, signifying a shift toward greater acceptance within religious circles.
Bhuptani’s message underscores the potential for the Hindu faith to be a powerful force for LGBTQ+ inclusion. By embracing its inherent acceptance of diversity and challenging discriminatory interpretations, Hinduism can contribute to a more just and compassionate world for all individuals.
